SingTel Fiber Broadband

I am selected to conduct a trial on the SingTel Fiber 200Mbps Broadband aka exStream.  5 x SingTel technicians came to install the devices on the 17 Sept 2010 @ 1700hrs.  Yes, 5 of them, i was surprised why they need so many people to do it.  Anyway, service was not activated at time of installation.  Only able to use it 1.5 day later. A total of 3 devices were given:

1. Optical Network Terminal (Ericsson T063G)

2. Mio Gateway (2Wire 5012NV-002)

3. MiO TV Set Top Box

The specification of the fiber connection stated on SingTel website claimed to be able to achieve up to local 200Mbps download / 100Mbps upload, international 25Mbps download / ? Mbps upload.  Did several speed test using speedtest.net and ftp, I am unable to achieve the stated max speed.  (You can refer to the results at the bottom of this post).  However, i manage to get 1ms ping for local.  Haha… It will be good for gaming i suppose.  During the test, I am using a 3m Cat6 LAN cable connected directly to the 2wire gigabit port.  This router has 4 x LAN ports.  Unfortunately, only one of them is a gigabit port.  How strange.  Should have made all 4 ports gigabit.  Also asked my friends to test my upload speed.  He is using StarHub 16Mbps MaxOnline and he manage to download files at his max speed @ 2250KB/sec from my FTP.  Cool….

The internet connection is quite stable, has been up for 3 days and I did not encounter any disconnection so far.  As for the IP, it is classified under the same range as the SingNet ADSL BroadBand’s IP.  I can’t determine whether it is static or dynamic assignment yet.  Till now, my IP has not yet changed.    It could be static, or it could be the DHCP lease time is configured to a long period?

Have attempted to bypass the 2wire router and connect my laptop directly to the ONT.  However, my laptop’s LAN adapter was unable to grab any IP.  Inspected the 2wire router WAN configuration and saw that it is using DHCP for WAN.  But i got no idea why I can’t grab any IP using my laptop.  Tried to configuring PPPoE…failed.  Even tried cloning the 2wire WAN’s MAC address, also failed.  Tried to set static IP using a few well know range, also failed.  Lastly, also tried setting static public IP leased to the 2wire router, also failed.  Can’t seem to find any administrator manual online for this ONT.  If anyone got any idea what is wrong and how to bypass the 2wire router, please do let me know.

In order to bypass the 2wire router, you have to assign VLAN ID to receive the respective traffic:
- Internet: 10
- IPTV: 20
- VoIP: 30
- Management: 40

Unfortunately, DIR-655 do not support WAN VLAN tagging.  Guess have to stick to 2wire.. =(  Thanks to xieliwei from HWZ who found out that the packets are vlan tagged using wireshark.

The fiber broadband service comes with Mio TV and Mio Voice.  So far, Mio TV was quite good, no freeze, no lag.  This is the first time i use Mio TV after it has launched for so many years.  I am surprise they do not have Net Geo and Discovery channel.  They are my favorite documentary channels.  Furthermore, they also don’t have my favorite Taiwan channels to watch all the lame variety shows.  Nevertheless, they do have Video On Demand (VOD) for movies, MobTV etc.  However, these shows are not free… Have to pay on a monthly subscription basis or per view basis.  Conclusion for Mio TV, i still prefer Starhub CableTV.  The boot up time for Starhub set top box is much faster, they have more channels, more HD channels, better GUI and lastly they have net geo and discovery.

As for Mio Voice, no comments so far.  I didn’t really use it because I also have Starhub Digital Voice and my mum friends do call the Starhub number.  I don’t want to purposely buy another phone just to test it out.  Anyway, I did made a few phone calls.  No voice lag, sound quality is normal.  I do not have the device to test the video call.

In conclusion, I feel that the fiber broadband is not necessary for home users unless you need to use Mio TV or you are a heavy file leecher.  I cannot feel any difference when I use it to surf the net.  It is because surfing net doesn’t consume much bandwidth and also international traffic are throttled at 25Mbps, which ADSL/MaxOnline are also able to achieve.  I would think more than 95% of my traffic are channeled to overseas, unless i surf HWZ/VRZ.  And for the price starting at $85.90/mth, IMO it is too expensive.

I have a few questions about your experience with Fiber optic. I would like to contact you via email.

I am currently living in Singapore and I have the Fiber Optic outlet installed. I am debating between cable vs adsl vs fiber.

I read all the forums but I can’t still make up my mind, It’s just 3 years I am in Singapore and all the people I know only have cable and a few have ADSL.

    Drop me an email ?

    Thanks,

    Ray

Hi, about configuring the VLANs on DD-WRT, am I right to configure VLAN IDs 10,20,30 and 40 on eth1 (WAN)?
I have tried this using the default settings of DD-WRT but the ONT does not seem to provide the router with an IP address. I would appreciate any help that you can offer. I’m using the Netgear WNDR3700 router.

do you know the ip to access the gateway? wanna change the ssid, and password. but http://192.168.1.254/ doesnt seem to work.

  6. sam says:

Most assured way of getting the gateway address is to go into command prompt and type ipconfig /all & look for the default gateway.

I am joker of SingTel.They said F/W not updated and caused No Service on Fiber for 4 days.

On 1st March 2012,SingTel came and said its my mio TV STB issue and they don’t have immediate stock to change my faulty equipment that time.

Today 4th March 2012 @ 11:31 AM,SingTel Just Change the mio TV Set-Top Box,2wire 5012NV-002 and a new Errcison T063G ONT.First, they change the mio TV Set-Top Box and it shows only the Black mio TV logo and it won’t move at all.Technican try reset for 30 Minutes but still shows only mio TV Logo.after trying for another 30mins technician decided to change the modem instead because he said likely to be modem spoil.but still shows mio TV Logo Screen. No choice, the technician also suspect the ONT Got problem and they change for me.In the end,I got everything changed…1) New Set-Top Box 2) New Pace 5012NV-002 Gateway 3) New ONT.The technician stayed till the issue and resetup my equipment.
So now the issue has been resolved and don’t have HDMI Issues for now.Hope to keep my fingers crossed and hopefully the next few day have no problem!I would like to thank SingTel CSO,mio technicial Support and Joymer for resolving the issues that I’m facing that time.

A long Story for SingTel Fibre Bundle Service Problem.

On 3rd March 2013,Last week, while watching Primadona 2 on Astro Ria,the tv suddenly shows TV Signal has been lost, please call 1688(For Home Users) or 1606(For Business Users):,(Code 150).
On 9th March 2013, We recontract exPlore Home 100(Same plan as we upgrade from exPlore Home 50 in October 2012) and they told me that there will be no new modem and Set-Top Box replacement as they are in good condition. But after we went home from Marina Bay Sands,at 9:00 PM till 10th March 2013 at 3:00PM on 10th March 2013,the modem reboot 10 times so they replaced the modem. This week is the worst one ever seen, the modem decided to hang itself and mio TV decided to stop working, once showed TV Signal has been lost message for four times the whole evening and after that it switched to VER 2.3 with whole screen blank.
On 10th March 2013, SingTel came and replace my Pace A5520N to Asus N66U for replacement but same issue persisted and we called 1688 again and they agreed to come on Monday at 12:00 to 2:00 PM to solve this issues.
On Monday 11th March 2013,they came again for the 2nd time to replace both 2nd mio TV Set-Top Box branded Tatung STB 2300 SG-1 and Asus N66U to Pace A5520N due to some network conflicts issue and They replaced it for free of charge. But on Monday,18th March 2013,the Pace A5520N started to reboot by itself again at random timings and watching BPL is a pain as the modem crashed
On Friday 22nd March 2013 they came and replaced from Pace A5520N to 2wire 5012NV modem due to Xperia P Phone and the modem also have issues too.The Service LED turned red and the modem Hard reset by itself due to glitches and also My mio TV also got 2 gears screen issue before.SingTel guy came over and replace the STB at no extra charge.Pace A5520N was also replaced at the same time to replace the faulty 5012NV on monday.
On Monday 25th March 2013,SingTel Fibre Technician guys come to my house and told me this They said no need to waste time.Your mio TV STB is very faulty and I will replace it free of charge and after that the problem will be solved after all and do not switch off everything from the power socket and then he started to replaced both Mio TV Set-Top Box and 5012NV modem to brand new Motorola VIP1200 AP mio TV Set-Top Box,Power Adapter and remote controller as a replacement.then he changed from 5012NV modem to Pace A5520N modem and upgrade the software on the modem to most stable firmware to support mio TV and Internet. Then, the technician tested the 2 newly installed mio TV and newly activated 100MBPS Fibre Internet
Now,my exPlore Home 100 with mio TV Family+ Pack is activated on 25th March 2013 instead of 16 March 2013 as stated in the contract stated in the form.
After replacement on monday, today morning they called my father and they will give us 2 weeks free subscription as viewing of mio TV Content is interrupted and cannot surf internet at all.

The video about mio TV Problems to show you guys is not available for viewing and to share for those who come with this problem in the future.

  15. saffie730 says:

SingTel 2wire/Pace aka 5012NV will no longer support mio TV Service since 1st April 2013.Users who have mio TV and Broadband on Fibre will have to use Pace A5520N in order to watch mio TV on Fibre Connection.
